If you were to only move one base station a meter to your right, your system would know something is up and recommend that you redo your room setup, because it can't tell *which base station moved, just that the distance between the two has changed by a meter. your chaperone would move a meter to the right, unchanged, and your entire vr system wouldn't have a clue anything changed. if you were to move both base stations a exactly meter to the right without changing their angles or position relative to each other. room setup simply lets you put up the chaperone boundaries in relation to your base stations. or your expensive breakable thing you definitely don't want to run into when inside whatever virtual reality floats your boat.īecause your base stations are in a fixed place, and act as reference points for your tracked devices, the whole of your tracked space is fixed in reference to your base stations. the base stations aren't sensors or cameras, so they can't ”see” your walls, ceiling, or floor. While this is great for things like conferences and using your setup in a warehouse, it's useless for most home users, because without room setup, steamvr and the lighthouse tracking system doesn't know anything about your room. this is why you can do a ”quick calibrate” under the dev options and have steamvr set your chaperone up for a number of room sizes. On their own, without room setup, using a tracked devices like your hmd, controllers, or vive tracker, the lighthouse system can figure out where the base stations are in relation to each other, and provide reference for devices to determine their position just fine. Yes, if you move or change the angles of the base stations in any way, you will need to redo room setup.
